Christian Legal Aid

  • Pursuing Justice, Bringing Hope, and Changing Lives

At Christian Legal Aid of Los Angeles (CLA-LA), we understand that pursuing “justice for all” is an essential aspect of loving our neighbors. We believe that providing access to basic legal services is a powerful way to offer a hand-up to the most vulnerable in society:  veterans, the elderly, homeless families, victims of domestic violence, and refugees. At Christian Legal Aid of Los Angeles, our mission is to share the love of Jesus Christ by cultivating a passion for justice in our community and providing free legal services and hope to those in need in Los Angeles County.

  • Christian Legal Aid of Los Angeles (CLA-LA) conducts free legal aid clinics once a month, where we have pro-bono attorneys that speak to clients about their legal issues and try to assist them as much as possible. All of the legal services are geared to educate clients as to their rights and remedies and train them to negotiate and handle their own legal disputes.  We rarely provide ongoing assistance because the demand for free legal services greatly exceeds the supply of attorneys able or willing to provide such services.

At the monthly clinics, which operate like legal urgent clinics, volunteers interview clients, diagnose the legal issues, educate the clients on their basic legal rights, prepare and review documents, and train clients on how to file documents with the court and make court appearances.  In all cases, we seek to pursue justice, bring hope and change lives by sharing God's love with all in need!

  • CLA-LA has one qualifier for determining whether to serve a client: income.  All clients must be at or below the definition of “very low income,” as set forth in the Housing Community Development Guidelines for housing in Los Angeles.  When possible, CLA-LA refers individuals who do not fit within these guidelines to outside attorneys who provide services at a reasonable rate. *Please visit our website at www.cla-la.org.

  • We assist clients in the legal areas of expungement of criminal convictions, family law, immigration, landlord/tenant and tenant/tenant issues, bankruptcy, probate, employment, small claims, and small business.

  • We need you! Christian Legal Aid of Los Angeles is looking for attorneys, paralegals, law students, legal assistants, legal volunteers, and interpreters. Do you have a couple of hours once a month on a Saturday to assist low-income clients? Please contact Chrystal Hicks, the Office Administrator for CLA-LA, at chrystal@cla-la.org.

*If you are an attorney volunteer, please identify yourself as an attorney and let us know about your specific practice areas, other legal expertise and/or languages, and a phone number where you can be reached.

*If you are a non-attorney volunteer, please let us know what law school you attend (if applicable), other legal expertise and/or languages, and a phone number where you can be reached.
